Having an Oklahoma CPS Attorney Can Benefit Your Case
Video Transcribed: You’re in a relationship, everything’s going well, this is amazing… until it’s not. The person starts becoming abusive, they start using substances in or around your home, any other things start going on. And you decide that for you and the children’s best interests, either they need to leave or you have to leave.
Then DHS comes in and starts to ask you questions because they’ve made allegations against you. What do you do? Hello, my name is Ryan Cannonie, I’m a CPS Lawyer with the CPS Investigation Defense Law office.
So, what do you do in this situation? Well, the first thing you’re going to want to do is to call an attorney to talk about what should or shouldn’t happen during investigations. Investigators for DHS are very well-trained in talking to people and getting them to tell them what’s going on.
They’re forming what they call a rapport. It’s a bond. It’s this kind of friendliness that lowers people’s guard and gets you to say things that you probably wouldn’t say if you had an attorney present, or in just normal conversation you wouldn’t say. But a lot of times they can get you to admit things that are going to be harmful to you later on.
So, what happens in this situation? Well, I’ve seen everything from, DHS is there, you know, attorney steps in is advocating on their client’s behalf, and DHS is like, “Okay, look, this person seems to be doing this out of retaliation.
We’re not going to mess with anything.” I’ve seen it where DHS says, “Okay, well, we still want you to do these types of classes and courses and do all this extra stuff, or we’re going to file a case.” And that’s kind of the hammer on the end of that situation is, if you don’t do what they say, then they’ll try to take your kids.
And then there’s the situation where they take your kids and they file a case against you, and you have to work a plan. And you’re already working, trying to provide for a family on your own, and now you have to do classes and group therapy and counseling and all these other things each week, just to prove that you’re a good parent and can have your kids back, when all you did, to begin with, was try to protect them from your spouse, boyfriend, girlfriend, whoever the other person is.
If you find yourself in this situation, please give us a call. Give us a call as soon as you can, because in deprive cases, what happens at the beginning can set the tone for the entire thing, and so you definitely want someone there to help you when you’re getting the first DHS call.
